Maldives public holidays

Public holiday dates for the Maldives covering 2026 and 2027 — with the part every other list leaves out. 18 of these 25 dates can still move. They are marked, rather than printed alongside the fixed ones as though a calendar could know.

Only the President's Office declares a public holiday in the Maldives. Every lunar date below — Eid, Ramadan, Mawlid, National Day — is settled by sighting the moon, which is why published calendars disagree with each other by a day and why a roster built on the wrong one is a roster built twice.

14 AugustFridayNational DayQaumee Dhuvas, the first of Rabi' al-Awwal. Two of our three sources put it on Friday 14 August and one on Saturday 15 August — an unresolved disagreement, and a good illustration of why nothing lunar here should be treated as settled. Can move

Plan, but do not book, on a date that can move. Fixed dates are safe indefinitely. Tentative ones are fine for budgeting and rough rostering, and worth waiting on before anything that costs money to change.

What a list of dates cannot tell you

Only the President's Office declares a public holiday. Everything on this page is a forecast until they announce it, and we have marked which dates can still move rather than presenting them all with the same confidence.

Lunar dates are settled by sighting, not by calculation. Eid, Ramadan, Mawlid, National Day and the Day Maldives Embraced Islam all depend on the moon, which is why calendars published a year ahead disagree with each other by a day.

Multi-day festivals get one row per day. That is how the dates are listed here and how HumanR stores them, so a four-day Eid block counts as four days when leave is worked out.

Bank-only and sector-specific holidays are not listed. This is the general public-holiday calendar; a bank's own closure days and any resort-specific arrangements sit outside it.

Cross-checked against the sources below on 9 August 2026, and re-checked on every build to make sure the list has not quietly run out. Where sources disagreed, the disagreement is published in the note on the row rather than resolved silently.

Questions

Who decides the public holidays in the Maldives?

The President's Office. Holidays are declared by the President and published as official announcements — no calendar site, this one included, can confirm a date before that happens. Lunar dates in particular are settled close to the day, because they depend on the moon being sighted.

Why are some dates marked tentative?

Because they can still move. Eid, Ramadan, Mawlid, National Day and the Day Maldives Embraced Islam all fall on Islamic calendar dates, which shift against the Gregorian calendar and are confirmed by sighting rather than calculation. Calendars published a year ahead routinely disagree with each other by a day — ours says which dates those are instead of hiding the uncertainty.

How far ahead can I plan a roster on these dates?

The fixed dates — Independence Day, Victory Day, Republic Day, Labour Day, New Year's Day — you can plan on indefinitely. The tentative ones are safe for budgeting and rough planning, but anything that costs money to get wrong, such as flights or a shift handover, should wait for the official announcement.

What happens when a public holiday falls on a Friday?

A substitute day is usually declared, most often the following Sunday, so the holiday is not lost to the weekly day off. Those substitutes appear in the list where they have been forecast, and they are tentative for the same reason the day they substitute for is.

Do public holidays reduce the annual leave a trip costs?

For annual leave, yes. HumanR charges annual leave in applicable days — the calendar span of a trip minus the Fridays and public holidays inside it, with a holiday falling on a Friday subtracted once rather than twice. Other leave types charge the plain calendar span.

Can I use this list in my own system?

Yes. The download is a plain CSV of date, name and a tentative flag, which opens in any spreadsheet and loads into most HR systems. It is also the exact shape our own setup process uses, so it can be handed over as-is when a company moves onto HumanR.
