Maldives pension calculator
The Maldives Retirement Pension Scheme takes 7% of an employee's pensionable wage, matched by 7% from the employer. Simple enough for one person — the arithmetic that goes wrong at scale is which staff are registered, which wage is pensionable, and what happens to someone paid on two packages.
Change any figure below and the result updates. The employer's side is shown separately because it is a cost to the company, not a deduction from the employee.
The wage the scheme is charged on — usually the basic, not the gross. Allowances and overtime sit outside it.
7% is the Maldives statutory rate, each side. It is a configurable setting in HumanR, so a deployment running a different rate can change it here too.
Optional — scales the totals to a whole team on the same package.
Remitted to the scheme, per employee
MVR 1,680.00
840.00 withheld from the employee and 840.00 paid by the employer.
An estimate for one wage, not a payroll. A real month also depends on who is registered with the scheme, whether a package carries a separate pensionable figure, and whether the person is paid on more than one package.
What a calculator cannot tell you, and a payroll has to
The base is the pensionable wage, not the gross. Where a package carries a separate pensionable figure the product charges that; otherwise it charges the basic. Allowances and overtime sit outside it.
Only staff registered with the scheme are charged. Someone whose pension status is not registered gets no deduction at all, which is what makes an expat-heavy roster look different from a local one.
A person on more than one package is charged once. Pension comes off the package carrying the basic, so a split-currency employee is not deducted twice.
The employer half is a cost to the company, not a deduction from the employee. Both are shown here because the total is what the scheme is remitted.
This calculator runs the same arithmetic as PayrollMath.Pension inside HumanR, re-checked against the product’s own test cases on every build. It runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.
Questions
Is the 7% taken from the gross salary or the basic?
From the pensionable wage, which for most packages is the basic. Allowances, overtime and one-off payments normally sit outside it. Where a company has agreed a pensionable figure that differs from the basic, HumanR carries it on the salary package and charges that instead.
Does the employer's 7% come out of the employee's pay?
No. The employee's 7% is a deduction from their salary; the employer's 7% is an additional cost to the company. The scheme is remitted the total of the two, which is why the calculator shows both.
Are expatriate staff charged pension?
Only if they are registered with the scheme. HumanR charges pension on the basis of each employee's pension status, so a roster that mixes registered and unregistered staff produces a mixed result — which is exactly the case a flat spreadsheet formula gets wrong.
What happens to someone paid in two currencies?
They are charged once. Pension comes off the package that carries the basic, so an employee with a rufiyaa package and a dollar package is not deducted twice.
Can the rate be changed?
Yes. The rate is a statutory setting rather than a hard-coded constant, so a deployment operating under a different regime can set its own and every payroll run from that point uses it.
